Basic Maintenance 101... The Car Manual

Becoming a car owner is a laudable feat and as drivers, we know it’s important to maintain our vehicles. Maintaining a car can be a daunting task especially when we have to deal with our work, the kids, and the dozens of other things we’d rather be doing but still we have to take care of them to ensure its reliability and prevent breakdowns. Used cars especially need extra attention as they are more difficult the reason been that we do not have the car history, what has been changed, what's needed to be done, sometimes the sellers of these used cars conceal informations about the status of the car just so they can sell. some go as far as removing parts of these cars, selling these parts in the Tokunbo market to make more money. These factors make used cars more difficult to maintain than a new car.

The basic key to a good maintenance is the Owner's Manual. We must pay attention to the car manual regardless of the vehicle you drive, your regular maintenance schedule is inside it. You will discover how often your manufacturer really does suggest you change your oil, your filters, any drive or timing belts in your vehicle, and more. In Nigeria, a lot do not pay attention to the manual as to when to change their engine oil, so it has been impressed on us to change it every 3000 - 5000 miles. The right oil for your car is specified in the car manual. The job of the engine oil cannot be over emphasized as without it, the engine would breakdown. It includes: Lubricating internal parts of the engine reducing wear and tear, assist in cooling the engine by transferring heat away from the combustion chamber, absorbs contaminations, suspends wear particles, suspends soot that forms as a result of combustion etc. These reasons and more make the engine oil very important. Our next post we would go into filtration
