Oil Filters...the facts!

Sorry for my long absence. It wasn't unconnected to the fuel situation right in the country. This has propelled me to deal extensively on Fuel economy in cars but that would start with my next post as this is also as important. So let's go...

Oil filter is the most common and an important part of the engine. This filter constantly clean the engine oil removing organic and inorganic contamination, soot at high temperature and pressure. These oil filter look simple but they are objects of continual research to make them work better. There are two types of oil filters; The Spin-on filters (shown above) and the oil filter elements. There are two important parts of the Spin-on filters, The filter element inside the Metal casing and also the base gasket

The base gasket the ring- like rubber on the filter. Because of heat and pressure, these parts deteriorate with time and more mileage. The filter element on the other hand is made of synthetic materials reinforced with fiber glass designed specially for oil filtration at high temperature and pressure.

In Nigeria, due to the absence of quality control measures, a lot of fakes (imitations) have found their way into the our market and some customers have had to pay dearly for this. Some have had to buy new engines while some others have had various problems with their cars. These fakes are sold very cheap with the saying "its just oil filters, we go change am". I can assure you that those who sell these fakes do not use them for their vehicles but just to make money. Genuine oil filters (pictured above) would cost from N2,000 due to the high exchange rate. They usually come with the companies' inscriptions say Toyota, part numbers and that of the OEM company that manufactures for them (if any).
